Rebuild Claysville and Vine Street Substations

In 1974 the Claysville Electric Substation was erected to add additional electric capacity to the City’s electric system. The 5000 KVA transformer is now underrated for the needs of the city and the substation is now being rebuilt by the City Electric Distribution Crew. A rebuilt 10,000 KVA transformer was purchased and set in place of the existing transformer. The rebuilt transformer cost about half of what a new transformer would have and the warranty being offered is three times longer than a new one.

The site itself was expanded to allow maneuverability within the structure. The area has been graded out and a retaining wall erected on the North and East sides. A new 8’ chain link fence surrounds the facility. A new electric grid work has been installed 2’ in the ground, backfilled with earth and rock. The two circuits fed from Claysville were back fed from our Scott Avenue and Vine Street subs. The station was then taken out of service and the existing transformer disconnected and removed. Once the new unit was  in place, the breakers, fuses, cutouts, insulators, etc., were replaced. The main buss was upgraded so that two more circuits can be added to the station. Upon completion the station was tested and then placed back on line.

The old 5000 KVA transformer was rebuilt for use at the Vine Street Substation. The Vine Street sub initially was the property of Kentucky Utilities. It was purchased by the City of Paris in 2001. The substation was upgraded about 1970, but the transformer was built in 1939. The same upgrades were put in place at Vine Street. The two circuits were fed from Claysville and Scott, the station taken off line and the transformer removed. With the rebuilt 5000KVA transformer in place, all of the equipment was replaced with that identical to Claysville. Two identical Cooper breakers were installed. Once tested, the station was placed back into service.

New Police Cruisers

The Paris Police Department has received eight new Ford Crown Victoria vehicles for their fleet. Detective Jeff Lizer leased for purchase, through state contract, the vehicles. Members of the department have been earnestly working to transfer equipment to the new cruisers and ready them for active duty. Hopes of purchasing more of these vehicles over the next year or so would give the entire Paris Police force new and dependable cruisers to better serve the community.

GIS Mapping System

Trimble Recon Unit and Pathfinder Receiver

The City of Paris is in the process of mapping its water, wastewater and electric utilities using the Pathfinder GPS Trimble unit to locate different aspects ot the utility systems and then exporting them into the ArcGis mapping program by ESRI Software. The system was initially purchased through the efforts of former Communications Supervisor Pete Clough who retired in 2006. The ESRI software is used in conjunction with the E-911 Spillman program used for Central Communications.

The Trimble Recon unit will allow all aspects of the utility systems to be properly mapped and placed in their GIS co-ordinates on the State Plane map. Electrical poles, transformers, capacitor banks, electric meters, substations, street lights, fuses, cutouts, etc. as well as water line valves, fire hydrants, water meters, manholes and lift stations will be easily located for emergency purposes and data associated with each item will make the information available with the click of the mouse.
