Important Information about your drinking water… Our water system recently violated drinking water standards. The City of Paris Combined Utilities had a level of trichloroethylene above drinking water standards. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct the situation.
We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Testing results that we received for 03/07/2012 show that our system exceeds the standard, or Maximum Contaminant Level(MCL) for trichloroethylene. Results indicated .428 parts per million(PPM). The Maximum Contaminant Level(MCL) for trichloroethylene is .005 parts per million(PPM). Test results taken since the .428 PPM result indicate levels below the MCL.
What should I do? You do not need to use an alternative(e.g., bottled) water supply. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult you doctor.
What does this mean? This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. Some people who drink water containing trichloroethylene in excess of the MCL over many years could experience problems with their liver and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.
What happened? What is being done? Trichloroethylene can be found in discharges from metal degreasing sites and other factories. It is not known why the trichloroethylene level was above the MCL as there are no known discharges above the intake of the water treatment plant and test results have been and continue to be below the detection limits for trichloroethylene with the exception of the one test on 03/07/12. We are now on a quarterly monitoring schedule to ensure that the trichloroethylene level stays below the MCL.
